I the past I bought, sold, driven, race, pimped and restored quite some old metal. Mostly pre 80's VW like my previous double barrel Weber carb fire spitting '74 VW Passat.

Last week I spotted a VW EOS 2.0 TFSI 200hp DSG on autoscout.de, fitted with the individual package that comes close to full options but with a small note "motorschaden, nicht fahrbereit"

My love for old metal didn't win over the thoughts of late night summer cruises after I checked it out. The price is so low and the general state near mint, it is a viable plan to import the convertible do an engine overhaul :)

I removed the hideous wheel caps on the winter wheels and took it home:

At the moment I am diagnosing the engine's internal damage. After a peek through the sparkplug holes it looks like a "kolbenfresser", scoring on the 2nd and 3rd cylinder. After the appraiser assessed the damage for the import duties (more damage, lower duties!) I am going to pull the engine for an overhaul and uprating of the internals, preparing for uprated ECU software.

Happy on my oppo lock car buy!

Asking for a money pit

vw

Needing and engine overhaul

Dsg (w/ added torque)

Import

Up rated ecu software (i get it, better internals)

A money pit if you have to have the work done and right away, I tucked it in my garage... doing all the work, pulling the engine and overhaul, in my spare time.. Summer is still far away :)

good luck with your new project. You've got bigger balls than me taking this on, but appears that you have open eyes about it.

I think the most shocking thing about this post is the Ram 2500 in the EU.

I 've always thought about a modern project car. Cool.
Is that your pick up ?

Is that your Ram? I've probably seen less than a handful of pickup trucks in my time in Holland. That must be an expensive one for taxes and fuel.

Good luck with the Eos.

The Ram is a friends truck, he runs a scrapyard so the taxes reasonable for a company owned car... Fueling is done by squeezing the juice out of the to be scrapped cars :)

The price difference on the car is about 6500 Euro after duties compared to similar cars on the local market so I got some room to play around in the coming months.

Ah, good deal then. Plenty of room for a replacement or rebuild on the engine as well as some modifications.

How will the DSG cope with the power you plan on adding? I'm not to knowledgeable on the DSGs but I recall reading somewhere that they won't handle much more torque than stock, and that you shouldn't tow with one but that's irrelevant.

Just did a compression test, even with oil on the piston the 3rd cylinder barely reaches 3 bar...so if the walls are toast, low mileage scrapyard engines go between 1200-1600 with warranty.

I didn't do my research on the DSG fitted in my EOS yet but I am very aware of the DSG torque limits.

That's actually brilliant.

The dodge is a owned by a very convenient friend :)

I got the EOS registered on monday, titled on friday... Besides some minor electrical issues (control panel window and the left Xenon bulb), cruizing is great!

Any future plans for the car?

I've always heard that importing cars from germany to here was pretty expensive, never heard of a discount for damaged cars.. I need to look into that..

I picked up 8x18" Interlagos wheels as a starter, just to have a look how the wheelarches look on the sportpackage springs... Next on the list, lowering I'm not sure about going for bags or springs/shocks... I need to testdrive a bagged car I think.

I'm going to use the car as a daily for the coming weeks to put some kms on the engine while it is still under warranty, after that.. only minor remapping, it's not a racer ;)

The "discount" is for the import duties to The Netherlands, % of the damage may be deducted when properly appraised.

Depends on what you want with the car and how much money you are looking to spend, bags are the best option because it is the best of both worlds, springs/shocks are cheaper yes, but the ride will be worse generally. I speak from experience, I drove a Seat Arosa today wich was lowered 2 cm, and with every bump we were bouncing inside the car, and the hard bang can't be good for the car..

Also having a static lowered car is not fun here in the netherlands, my car isn't even lowered that much but my front bumper still scrapes over the mountains we call speedbumps.
